Yes I use powdered graphite then push it around with a watercolor brush then to darken certain areas I use lighter fluid on a water color brush the lighter fluid does not mar the paper it acts like water but does not affect the bristol paper it can be used on any paper and doesn't ruin it. It drys imediately and it makes a great wash smooth effect. I use just a small amount in a cap there is no clean up since it evaporates. No mess no fuss. Be careful it is flamable. Buy it in the plastic bottle not the tin can it rusts in the tin. You can also use a hard paper smudge stick to work the hair and areas you want to be really dark.
They have powdered charcoal too I don't have it yet but you can bet I will be experimenting with it too. I would use it the same way I use the graphite powder. Only use a small amount of the powder I place it on top of a butter dish top and it goes a long long way. I have been using the same bottle for years. Dick Blick has it.
Hey, ... it's years since I saw anything about Yul Brynner. This is fantastic Christine. The King and I - he was too cute. It's a joy to see your lovely creations popping up again.
Yes it has been a long time. I got sick of doing hair so this one was appealing to me. Hey do take a rest after moving I will be awaiting your new portrait when things get settled somewhat. Be safe and get some rest!!!
Did you see The King and I it too was an excellent movie and was a big hit here in the U.S. It ran for years here and is still one of my favorite musicals of all time. I also like so many of those up lifting musicals. Like Sound of Music, Annie get your Gun, Oklahoma, South Pacific, they are loaded with wonderful music and lyrics. A world of entertainment and fun!!!!!!!
I saw the Ten Commandments, and Anastasia and the Magnificent Seven don't remember Taras bolba but I bet it was good too. Anyway you could start to do more of the musical personalities if you so desire. I loved all of them!!
Thanks I still struggle with the contrasts. I hope to be improving but it is a big step. I keep praying for more patience I like to get these done quickly. Have a great Sunday!!!
I absolutely loved The King and I a real classic I look forward to seeing all your work just not enough time to appreciate all the magnificent artists on this site. Keep creating and have a great Sunday.

Thanks Henri still waiting for that painting of yours to make a big impact it did with me and is one of my very favorites on this site. Thanks for sharing!!!!
Oh I just noticed the scanner botched up the left ear. I testify that that ear is very clear and precise on the original. I hate having to piece together these portraits. I try to get them close but the drawings are much better than they appear here. Have a great Sunday now and stay happy and healthy!!!
