Thank you, Anne-Marie. I saw a photo of R.A. with a dark background, and I thought it would be right for putting my carbon pencils to use again. I am not pleased with my drawing of his face, however. But, there is always another day, and another photo. I will try again.
Diferentes, pero no mejor mi trabajo, Marino. Gracias, de todos modos. I hope R.A. never sees it. My first drawing of him, the colored pencil one looks more like him, I think.
Thanks. Helen. I am pleased that you like it. Since I posted it, I have made a couple of tiny changes. Mainly to his eyebrows, and to the hair that falls down on his forehead.
You are right in this note , when drawing him, I felt in this he is really like Urs Buhler's.. in Richard I have four failed attempts, I could not get likenesses in the way I would, all my attempts was in Pencil
now I have a new attempt in photoshop
I do not know how you draw a portrait, but this is my way. I get a black & white copy of the face I want to draw, off the computer. Try to choose a photo with good contrast. Then with my 9"x12" light box, place the photo down on bed of light box, face up. Put a sheet of tracing paper down on top of it, and secure both with tape or paper clips. Next, I trace an outline of the face onto tracing paper. I turn the tracing paper over, re-trace the outline with graphite or colored pencil. Then turn tracing paper back so it is the same as in the photo. Paper clip the tracing paper down on top of the drawing paper, and trace outline onto it. After that, it is up to me to fill in the details. I hope this information is helpful. Do not use graphite on the back of an outline you want to draw with colored pencils or white charcoal or white pastel pencils. Good luck with photoshop. I do not have that.
It is not a secret. Several art books suggested this method. When I paint with oil paints, I paint what i see. No outlines, no tracing. I might make a few light pencil lines, or charcoal on the canvas, but that is all. If I am painting a scene, it isn't critical if a tree in my painting is a bit taller or shorter. But portraits are a different matter. As Shahin told me, if you are one centimeter off in a face, everyone will notice it. My traced outlines o fportraits are not perfect. I try to remember to use a clear (see through) ruler to check things in the photo and also on my drawing paper for accuracy. At first I did not do that often, but I am getting better about doing it now.
