This was a preliminary study for a full portrait of Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock (which I'm still working on). But I like it on it's own.

A fine portrait of Benedict Cumberbatch. If this result was only a trial, I can only imagine what your next portrait of him will be like. I look forward to seeing it.

Thank you. I'm still working on the colour. Still not happy with it! Hope I can find time to give it a real good going over!

I have some acrylic paints, but except for a couple of times, I haven't used them on portraits. My problem is that I painted with oils for many years, before I took up portrait drawing with graphite and colored pencils. I haven't gotten out my acrylics enough to get used to handling them. I am used to oil paints staying wet a long time, and it is just the opposite with acrylics. I'm afraid to use them, just as I was with colored pencils, at first. You seem to be doing just fine with acrylics.  :blowkiss: :cute:

You probably need to buy some more - acrylics have changed greatly in the last few years. There are two problems - one, they dry darker and two, they dry quickly. Winsor & Newton's Artist Acrylics are now all colour fast, so the colour you use is the colour it stays - very useful. The same brand also last a bit longer, but you can always add Slow Drying Medium which will give you a lot more time. You can also buy Glazing Medium, which makes layers work well and gives the same vibrancy as linseed oil. Most people wouldn't know my portraits are acrylic - they look like oils.

Your information about how to use acrylics, is the best that I have received so far. Thank you. I bought a set of 48 Liquitex acrylic paints in the summer of 2011. I also have some Liquitex slow-dry blending gel, but no Glazing Medium. I will buy some of that, and give my acrylics another try. I know about the quality of Winsor & Newton products. Many of my oil paints are W&N paints. All of the watercolor paints that I bought in small tubes, were made by Winsor & Newton. I guess my biggest problem is that I've been drawing with pencils because I am most comfortable with them. That, and the fact I haven't arrived at the skill level that I want to reach with them.

Maybe there are some classes around that you could try? You just need to make a start - it's not as daunting as you might think. I have a lesson on painting with complementaries on my deviant art page (lemon lesson & orange lesson). Will try to leave a link here - not sure if I can.

Thank you. Yes, that link is good. I went there and I viewed it. I understand the theory of complimentary colors, having painted with oils for quite a few years, but your tutorials are excellent for those who do not know about this. I admire your work, Penny. You have a fine DA gallery. Our three daughters have most of my oil paintings now, but several that I have, appear in my DA gallery

Thank you for your kind words. Your paintings are absolutely lovely - the sky in the landscape is beautiful - and my kids have a lot of my work too!
