Roger Miller (1936-1992) is an American singer-songwriter who became famous for "Dang Me", "King of the Road" (link to a video below), "England Swings", the rooster's three songs in Disney's 1973 "Robin Hood", and the 1984 Broadway musical "Big River".
This portrait is based on a 1967 black and white photo to which I added adequate colours.
Here is a link to a cover version of Walkin' in the Sunshine that I made using MuseScore and OBS (the link to the original recording is at the very end of the description): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7NF0jojRKs

You did it, did it , did it . And you certainly did it wonderfully well :whip
Great to see the first Roger Miller on the site. Well done to both of you
Well done to Team Stars Portraits for creating a Roger Miller gallery here and putting my drawing in it. Many stars from before the Internet and from the offline world aren't on the star maps of art websites yet, so it's good to add one now and then. Thank you very much for getting me to realise that I had submitted nothing for quite a while, and for getting me to draw again. I'm surprised I was out of inspiration and energy for that long, and also surprised what my finished portrait looks like as my reference photo, used for a CD cover, looks like this: https://www.sunrecords.com/artists/roger-miller
You certainly seem to have caught an expression in your portrait which I don't see in the photo!!! Your work has a strong sense of R.M.s personality , and (for me ) a lot of his humour !! He was a wonderful talent , and sharp as a razor. I read that one day while driving , he saw a large advertising notice " Trailors for sale or Rent "....
Indeed, indeed, and I think you might like the Roger Miller biography by Don Cusic I'm currently reading, "Dang Him!" ... I'm so happy that you saw "the wild child's" personality and humour in my little portrait. I see it's night... Well dear Tom, you made at least my next 24 hours.
Thank you for the recommendation of the book. Because of that I have it downloaded to my "kindle". Unfortunately I have just started a real book by Patterson, and will complete it before starting my R.M. one
But it is something to look forward to
You're welcome. My turn to thank you. You've just reminded me that before starting my current read, I was reading another book, about which I completely forgot, ha, ha! Well, enjoy your current read and also your next.
I've managed to write my instrumentless instrumental cover of "Walkin' in the Sunshine" and to make a video out of it. First I used MuseScore, software (freeware) with which it's possible to write music scores when you know how to write music. The software can play what you're writing, so you can choose among lots of virtual instruments depending on the sound you want to create, and then you can play the music and display a virtual piano keyboard to see how it handles what you've written, which is rather funny to watch. Then I used another freeware called OBS to make a video thanks to screen capture, and converted the resulting file into a video that I posted to my little YouTube channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7NF0jojRKs
Yes, it has been a while hasn't it? I'm like a car I guess, sometimes I roll, sometimes I stall. I too am glad to be back here with something new to share. I'm happy you like this drawing, Dorit, thank you very much
That's great, Vanessa. I took a break for one year. But since september I'm back with new inspirations. Sometimes it is good to take a break. So welcome back and I will look forward for new art from you!
Well you see, apparently I you was so sure you'd left for good that I'd stopped following your gallery, heavens! Sorry about seeing that and fixing the problem only now. Thus I'll see when you share new art too.
"King of the road ", de nombreuses reprises.
Oui ! tu as raison.
I'm happy to see my little tribute so heartwarmingly welcome. The way the drawing process turned out was unexpectedly right. When I start from a black and white photo and add colours, I can never tell if the outcome will be a miss or a hit. I only know that if it's a complete miss I won't post it at all And actually, it nearly was, because the paper wouldn't take the medium I first used for the jacket. What eventually worked was a black permanent marker I would never have thought of using for drawing until I did Thank you very much for your great comment, David
Funny I was just speaking with someone about King of the Road - his songs were regularly played on radio when I was young (AM radio ... HAHAHA) ... was he popular in Europe?
Not really, except maybe in Great-Britain, blame it on language barriers, translations and adaptations. A singer called Hugues Aufray did French versions of "Dang Me" ("Pends-moi") and "King of the Road" ("On est les rois") but radios didn't play actual Roger Miller singles, it's a pity. As to Disney's "Robin Hood", aside from the "Whistle Stop" song in the opening credits, everything got translated and lip-synced by a French guy nobody knew nor remembered, such a waste. My eldest brother, a computer science pro, discovered Roger Miller on YouTube in the 90s and bought a CD he made us listen to. My curiosity eventually went farther than his, not very long ago though. I chanced on a recent complete performance (in Asia, I think) of "Big River", the score impressed me ("River in the Rain" is wonderful). Then I explored Roger Miller's discog on Spotify, you really find gems in there. But I'm afraid France isn't much into country music (except for individuals like my eldest brother and me). Last time I went to a local music store and looked for the country music section, all they knew was Johnny Cash, no older and no younger stars.
Fascinating .. I have become captivated by Symphonic/Progressive female-fronted metal (Epica, Nightwish etc.), primarily a product of Northern Europe among many other areas, which is mostly ignored here in the U.S.
It's something which I read started in the 50s, anyway kids nowadays don't listen to what their parents (or grandparents) liked but to what their peers like. My parents told me what their parents liked and what they liked, my brothers listened to the music of their generation, I listened to that. But people from different social classes or origins tend to listen to different things. I took more interest in what my children, nieces and nephews liked than they wondered about what I liked, so they and I have different musical cultures as well as different movie cultures. Basically, we have common tastes because I bother and make room for what I like in what they like, and they don't bother at all. It's all about their friends' tastes mattering more than their parents'. So when I hear them hum something that radios and tv shows aired when I was a kid and I start singing along, they're surprised. Their sense of chronology is a bit confused When they sing with enthusiasm songs that I already found lame when they were released, I remember that they think my tastes are crap and ask them if they're sure that theirs are any better Is living in the now about making no room for memory of the past and of ancestors? It feels so strange. Makes you wonder if you and your kids will ever get to know each other. Too many new songs, too quickly forgotten, unsufficiently memorized and sung along in families while everybody loves karaoke in clubs. Odd times.
Thank you very much, dear friend. Not easy and even a bit scary, I watched colour videos and checked some details to get the colours about right but I started from this photo (I'm afraid the link must be copy-pasted to work) https://www.sunrecords.com/artists/roger-miller
I hope you and your family had a great Christmas, and wish you all a very happy year 2022 (I'm starting to write it to get used to it before it starts )!
To explain ...... when I wrote that message and clicked "submit" it appeared as ..."magic.magc.magic.magic "etc., etc.,etc.
But when it arrived with you , it was as it should be.
Sometimes things with these smileys are as they should be, sometimes they're not and when communication technology works fine, why it does is a total mystery to me

I'm with you !!

I hope you and your family had a great Christmas, and wish you all a very happy year 2022 (I'm starting to write it to get used to it before it starts

Don't you just hate it when the smileys don't work ?

Bon anniversaire

A Happy New Year to you ...AND... A Happy New Birthday too

I am now a Vintage Classic like all 50+ people, and I'm very glad of it. Thank you very much, Tom - and thanks for the cake, please have some

Well Vanessa, if you are Vintage, I must be close to Antique
Thanks for the slice of cake

If you're close to Antique I must be Mediaeval (well, I'm middle-aged), and both adjectives refer to very interesting times in History.
You're welcome
