Portrait of artist James(United Kingdom) Added on Dec. 16, 2008 16:36 Watercolor
This portrait is done with watercolours and a fineline drawing pen. I was inspired in the style of this portrait by the work of late 19th/early 20th century fairytale illustraitor Arthur Rackman
Yes, I used weak water colours and then for all the details, shadows and black parts I used Ink. I was trying to get the look of the old fairy tale illustrations. I found it a bit difficult to get the right likness in the face as I was trying not to put to much detail in using the ink as puting lines and shadows in with the black ink would have made her look to old. I noticed how in fairy tale illustrations by Arthur Rackman he puts very little detail in the faces with ink when he is drawing girls and young women but lots of lines and shadows in the faces of men and giants etc.
This is wonderful!
I have just googled the name of the illustrator who has inspired you and his work is really beautiful. Would be nice to see more portraits from you in this style.
Thank you very much, yes I would like to do some more like this, I thought the photograph of Dakota Fanning which I used for this one had the right kind of atmosphere. Have you got any suggestions who I should draw in this style? Oh and I love your gallery
You´re very welcome! I´m actually happy that I came across your drawing. Now I'd like to learn how to do such illustrations myself. And thanks for the compliment on my pictures. I appreciate this a lot!
I was thinking about a person for you to draw and chose Alexis Bledel. I wanted to draw her a while ago but never did it. I saw some nice outdoor photographs of her : gallery.celebritypro.com/celebrity-pictures-236.htm?page=17
I like those with the black dress among others. So this is just a suggestion. Any portrait from you in this style would be fine!
You're welcome. I did this one by first drawing it before colouring it with very weak watered down watercolour paint and then I went over it with a drawing pen, drawing in the details and shadows etc. Thanks I will draw Alexis Bledel, those photographs are great, I'll have a look at them and decide which one to use. I like the one you mentioned with the black dress and the roses and also some of the other outdoor ones were she is sitting down on grass in front of trees
I've heard that it is more common to use black ink or pen first and then colour it but I would also prefer to add the details at the end.
I'm so glad that you liked the photographs of her too and those where she is sitting on the grass could also be a nice reference picture. I think that she fits into this fairytale theme.
I'm looking forward to your work
Yes I know what you mean, she does. Also I think you're right about the ink, the main reason I did it that way around was because the ink I was using wasn't water proof so it would have ran with the wet paint, but I think I prefered doing it that way anyway.
