Excellent portrait John!! You did a wonderful job and I prefer this artwork better than your digital work. It's original and more realistic. whip: :whip: :whip: :whip: :whip: :blowkiss: :blowkiss: :blowkiss: :hi: :hi:

Ouch! Cut to the quick! Damned by faint praise! No more numerique for poor me! What will you do 2 (really 5) years from now when you learn that new program? :D :D :hi: :) :whip: :blowkiss:  :hi:

John, I certainly hope that I did not offend you in any way. I meant this as a sincere compliment. I like the way you create portraits and paintings with your hands rather than digital, but that's only my humble opinion. So please Chill out! We haven't even had time to look at this new digital program.  :blowkiss: :blowkiss: :hi:

 jpoulos2561 - 18/03/09, 21:22 reply
:hi: :) :whip: You didn't offend me Jeanette. I'm sorry I gave that impression. I took your comment with a whole box of salt. You're well within your rights to prefer whatever you like. I'm very much a beginner, so, anything I do with digital methods IS kinda sad...but sadder still is the argument, or even the implication that work done by hand is somehow intrinsically superior. After all, it's a matter of taste, selection, eye and heart whatever the tool in use. Assuming skill sets are in place across both disciplines, someone who has little or no artistic taste will generate the same level of work regardless. I once refused to hire an artist unless they could really draw. After 1988, I began to get better results from artists who had more going for them than "a wrist." They also had a mind and they were much less judgemental and more profitable. If I seemed snippy, I aplogize. And...thank you - again - for your compliments. Jeez! That was a rant. I won't say anything further. :blowkiss: :blowkiss: :hi: :hi: :hi:

Great work, as usual. You know, I guess artists age groups are not very difficult to see. If not from their portraits, then from their choice of portraits to comment on. :hi:

 jpoulos2561 - 19/03/09, 14:28 reply
Can I get an "Amen Brother!" It is definitely a story for the ages. And there are other sinister forces at work. While I can'i muster any enthusiasm for The Jonas Brothers or "Borderline" Bill Kaulitz, I DO see artistic merit in a good drawing of Jessica Alba, Keira Knightly and others who've come along after the flood. :D :D :D If I could raise a feeble defense, and expain why it isn't JUST generational, I'd want John Gardner at my table, reading at length from "No Country for Old Men." Thank you kindly for your lucid comment. :hi: :) :whip:

 heybu9 - 21/03/09, 16:52 reply
You know there are probably really young guys out there producing portraits of the old masters like the Jimmys; Stewart and Cagney, Edward G. etc. So maybe it's not an age thing, just great faces to help us get great(?)work. I don't make much of a job of it if I'm asked to draw a face that has never given me some pleasure! Though some of the newer guys might be O.K. You kwow, like M.Caine, S.Connery, A.Pacino etc :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi:

 jpoulos2561 - 21/03/09, 20:44 reply
I think the proliferations of easily available photographic and video reference (and the machines to make it even easier) have made history scholars out of young people who choose to avail themselves of it...and it hasn't hurt the rest of us either! Almost everyone, though, gets "stuck" in their heyday to some extent. :D :hi: :hi: :hi:

 heybu9 - 23/03/09, 18:11 reply
Although I'm continually denying it even to myself, I'm afraid I am a little "stuck". Guess the hook is just memories of good (maybe better?) times! :hi: :hi: :hi:

 jpoulos2561 - 23/03/09, 18:45 reply
Me too I'm afraid. I saw a guy about our age in a restaurant last year who still had his Elvis pompadour. :D :D :D His hair was thinning and he was backlit. His skull (!!!) was catching highlights through the hair! :D :D :D I'm gonna go get another haircut and maybe do some sit-ups too. :D :D :hi: :hi: :hi:

 heybu9 - 25/03/09, 13:17 reply
I'm afraid "I know exactly what you mean" as I see myself backlit when shaving! :cry:So more regular haircuts and give some thought to sit-ups :-?but not a lot :hi:

:D :D :hi: "I grow old, I grow old, I shall wear...my trousers rolled," You draw Frankie and Tony, I'll scratch out a palsied doodle of James Joyce and J. Alfred Prufrock. We'll leave Christina Aguilera and Miley Cyrus to the junior class, and maybe the nurse will bring us some prunes. :guffaw: :hammer: :8) :whip: :) :hi:

 jpoulos2561 - 23/03/09, 18:32 reply
I'll never convert Jeanette or anyone else...but you might - have already I'm sure! You certainly opened my eyes a little and I'm grateful. It is a sad point about digital art. Purists through the ages have been wrong much more often than they've been right. It's a great place to hide when you lack skill or understanding of some new technique or idea. When computers were born the phrase "garbage in - garbage out" was coined. It's still true. The artist with the greatest command of traditional skills makes the best digital practitioner. Clearly, the only reasonable attitude is acceptance of without pitiful carping. You are much more tolerant than I am. When I encountered the same sanctimonious attitudes in business, I fired them! Good (but not great) artists are a dime a dozen, thinkers are rare. :hi: :whip: :) :hi: :D :D :D :D :D

It is the eternal fiery fight between new and old (Delacroix and ingress, Wagner and brahmas, impressionists and academicians,….and so on)! Finally every front finds some fans! And the world will not end! :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw:
