gracias MM!! the 3 figures were imported from the crowd in a large canvas of a bullfight...Dali was loathe to cite any influences on his work...I always thought that without de Chirico there would have been no Dali as we know him...Gala was weary of sitting for her husband and finally looking like...a surrealist's model...so...maybe Dali is on his cell phone calling Magritte or ordering fishes & loaves & water & wine
Ah...Marino is a very learned man! Eluard indeed. There are very few translations in our insular 'united' States. Dali may have mentioned the poets...Eluard, Rimbaud, Baudelaire... because they were not visual artists & his vision could remain supreme. Still, though my mentors placed him a space behind many innovators, I love Dali!
thanks baby! while your new Adam & eve is loaded with Van Gogh, Cezanne, Soutine, Gauguin & even Goya, as well as all that drama & angst...it is very original & unforgettable
I'm sure the pressures were enormous. The great writer Gunter Grass was practically forced to become an anti-aircraft gunner (at 15 y.o.) and the great chess master Alexander Alekhine actually wrote propaganda...both later denied then apologized for their actions.
In his biography we read he returned to the Franco's Spain (even after the Second World War) and enjoyed many advantages! Other great Spanish artists of the 20 century, Miro, Picasso and Bunoel chose other ways! He was a famous and acknowledged artist in U.S.A(do you remember his cooperation with Hitchcock in Spellbound?) but he eccentrically returned to extremely religious and fascistic Spain!
I think it is a part of his jazzy life! Any way, I love his works and I look at a art works without thinking about creator's underwear!
