Chevy Chase

by JRFortson

Chevy Chase © JRFortson

Portrait of artist JRFortson (United States)
Added on May 04, 2009 21:35
Pencil

Subject: Chevy Chase (young)
Paper: Strathmore - Bristol Board - Premium Fine Tooth Surface
Medium: Staedtler Graphite Pencils
Size: 7.5 x 6.5
Completed: 5/3/09

This is the FIRST time I tried using Strathmore Bristol paper. I REALLY love how it reacts to graphite, but will take a little getting used to, as the B pencils seem lighter than normal, and you REALLY have to blend like crazy to penetrate the tooth of the paper!!!

I first saw Chevy Chase on "Saturday Night Live" and then in the movie "Caddyshack". So now it only seems right that I next draw "Carl Spackler" the former Greens keeper about to become a champion - Bill Murray.

Rick! You're doing a great job...you obviously "see" what you're looking at and translate the image with accuracy and style. Verrrrrrrrry nice! Roger www.rogercurley.com

 JRFortson - 05/05/09, 03:15 reply
Hi Roger...thx for the thought out comment. I checked out your site...nice! I just discovered I could draw 7 MONTHS ago. It was a passion as a child (30+ yrs ago) and I just found it again. I've got all sorts of opportunities coming my way, without trying is the key point, and now feel I would love to have a career in drawing, of some sort. Any advise? What say you?!?

a masterpiece, on bristol paper !!!! yes, it's not easy to have a great black with B pencils (I try everytime, but...I did not still understand how to do!!!!!!!!) GREAT GREAT GREAT WORK...        :*z: :*z: :*z: :*z: :*z: :*z: :*z: :hi:

 JRFortson - 05/05/09, 16:49 reply
THanks Chantal! It was a fickle bitch to work with, but it has it's pros and cons? Hard to get blacks, and it take elbow grease to render, but I think I like it? I layer the blacks, and then rub it with a paper towel, then re-apply 2-9B, THEN I blend it with a harder F pencil  :oO: :hi:

 chantal - 05/05/09, 16:59 reply
said like that..it seems to be easy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw:but you're a "strong" man...me not !!!!!!! :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw: :hi: :hi:

 JRFortson - 05/05/09, 17:07 reply
It doesn't really take strength? Just patience! 8o| Iand drawing either teaches you patience, or it takes from you what little you have left?!? :guffaw: :guffaw: :guffaw:

 Supersal - 06/05/09, 09:17 reply
So true! I think this is your best one yet! I love it, Awesome shading! Hey, is that you in your little icon?!

 JRFortson - 06/05/09, 15:38 reply
Thanks! It was the first on Bristol Board paper. I like it more than not. Pencils are much lighter and blending is tough! Oh, yeah that's me  u don't believe me, I send you original lol :hi:

 Supersal - 07/05/09, 03:46 reply
You should love it! It's great! Oh, and I DO believe that's you, I love gym and putting muscle on too! (Think L.Hamilton T2 but better, not as skinny) It's good isn't it, but not as good as drawing though. Hubby and I also waterski and barefoot, we taught our 6 and 8 yr old to ski too! They're little balls of muscle now aswell! But they're not aloud to touch the wieghts, too little and need grow properly I tell them!

Very nice Rick is this paper taking you to the end product a little faster. I used to take about eight hours on a drawing but now I can complete it in about average three hours. The speed will come eventually but practice, practice, practice will increase your production time. Keep trying to enlarge the drawings I think about 8x10 will give you some easement too it will actually go better for you. Oh go for it you are a diamond in the rough great talent and a super person

Oh I forgot to add for a better black try soft carbon pencil or even try using charcoal I do use the lighter fluid and blend with it and of course I like to use graphite powder for a nice soft gray wash. With the lighter fluid. It won't mar the paper like water or spit will. I guess it is sort of like a water color technique minus the water. For blending I use soft tissue some paper towel, anything soft to blend on the smooth bristol paper. Love the stuff and don't forget about the stonehendge paper tablets and matt fixative to fix the end product. You are already leaps and bounds ahead of me and one of the best on this site my dear friend!!!

Here I go again Rick do you have a Hobby Lobby near you? Try Sketch and Wash pencil. It is good for blacks on Bristol Smooth paper. You can use it with the lighter fluid from the plastic bottle from a small cap. No residue, no waste and a faster rendering experiment!!!!

lol...I clicked reply on your 1st post, got here and saw the other 2 and thought...crap, did I NOT answer her other posts? I really try not to leave people hanging. Anywho...I'm falling in LOVE with Bristol!!! It's works lighter, so you must use darker pencils, at least that's the message it's sending me? I actually do use all sorts of things to blend. Torchilons, Tortillions, Paper towel, toilet paper, Make-up foam applicators, cotton, q-tips...um...leave any out? :guffaw: I notice my speed picking up...IF I want it to? They used to take longer, I know that much. Don't know about lighter fluid, will try. Speaking of, I PROMISE to try color. I've had a basic set, unopened for months. I will also try charcoal too. Here is what I will post later this morning. Finished it last night. PS...one of best on site? WOW...I don't believe that, but TYVM! Oh and Happy mother's day!! I scrolled and scrolled and scrolled down your comments to tell you what you've already heard but will tell you that 1 more time: Awesome. Caddyshack is one of my all time favourite movies. 'Be the ball Danny' 'Gunga le gunga' 'Parrrrrrrp!' the last one was ultimately crude but OH so funny I love your stuff, and i adore a style that's consistant

 JRFortson - 21/05/09, 01:52 reply
Yeah I had that movie in mind when I did Chevy. I did Rodney, but not from the movie, and I did do Ted Knight screaming about the gopher lol. I have a good Bill Murray in mind of course. Thanks! Yeah you will love this site! I know it was a missing piece to my drawing experience that is usually done alone? When people who don't draw say...WOW that's one thing, but when accomplished like minded artist give u their option, it means more. You do really good work!!! Keep it up and welcome to stars!!!
