Right... Everyone has his own vision, sensibility and his particular method to represent an artist : B& White, color, different backgrounds... I try to be close to reality and I like using different techniks : ink, markers, pencil... the next technic I want to try is oil painting, but I need more time !
Sorry to be so tardy in answering your reply. I agree that it is good to branch out and try different things, but you are not going to like the "clean up" part, if you take up oils. It is not simple, like putting away pencils. Oil paints are truly great, but they can be messy to work with, if one is not careful. Also, if you use turpentine and you don't ventilate your work area, it can sure smell a room up. Whew! In fact, the whole house will smell like turpentine. I use mineral spirits now. Not as smelly. Maybe acrylics would be better. I will not buy them, though, as I already have too much invested in my oil paints. Besides, I am not sure the colors available in acrylics are as good. However, the manufactors of acrylics seem to be improving their products, constantly.
Thanks Jojemo for all these explanations. Actually, I know acrylics (I've done a wall painting in acrylic). I'll certainly do a portrait in acrylic soon, or at least... I'll try !
In that case, since you are an accomplished acrylic artist, I would stick with what you know, and not bother with the oils....at least for now. There is no rush. And if you do decide to try oils, just buy a limited palette of colors that you can be easily mix to achieve the missing colors.
