Well, in each drawing I use a slightly different method. In this piece, there are a lot of flyaways and dark shadows. Since I do the shadows in layers, I first layer down a light shadow, then pull out the highlighted strands of hair with a kneaded eraser.

I then work on the rest of the shadow layers around the highlighted strands.
For the dark strands, I just use a mechanical pencil.
