Hey Tom - great JL. Either you were being lazy or you managed to get a shot of him in the hereafter - his head's detached! All kidding aside this is PERFECT!
Your old portfolios are treasure troves (did someone call you "Ace?") I was cleaning out one of mine but the only old drawings I found were TV storyboards for Alvin and The Chipmunks singing "Old Time Rock & Roll" & "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" & "Sharp Dressed Man"
I have been surprised that this old stuff is so reasonable. I mistakenly put this as pastel, but it was coloured pencils, . I haven't done that for years, must see if I have any stubs about!!
I'm sure your old stuff is pretty interesting, John.
Hiya Ace! None of us are surprised. Were you employed in the art arena ?? I may clean up those old storyboards, the drawings are pretty good. And we had the rights from the Bob Segar, Cyndi Lauper & ZZ Topp people - it was a fun project.
I have had many jobs over the years, but art was always along side as a hobby. Sometimes I got involved for a time with little projects but never full time. Well, except for the time I was involved in Heraldry, producing Coat-of-arms, you know, family names etc. . Other than that I was lucky with some art-work, but always spare-time work.
You were the Pro. obviously, but maybe it was good for me that it never became a chore
I'll bet you were good at that too! I sometimes say, 'I've never worked a day in my whole life.' but, it's not true
On life within an ad agency, I was telling another friend that an old writer buddy said it best (so, I say again): "Oh, we'd rather be rotting in prison, Or shoveling chicken manure, Than making another revision, On another lousy brochure." Gee, I hope that wasn't you I already told that to! When I do that, I always fall back on James Joyce, who said, "I repeat myself? Very well then, I repeat myself."
Guess my feelings were different than your buddy's. On a bad day in Heraldry I'm pleased to admit ,I would have said "Well, it could be worse, we could be digging up the roads"
This usually when the rain was lashing down and I was helping myself to yet another cup of coffee! Not so bad
"Christ you know it ain't easy. You know how hard it can be. And before this is ooooo-ver...."... Ads can be fun too ... television and radio commercials are a kick if they look and sound good and if they work! Logo design gives you a little charge driving by the building. It's cool to see your package design on the shelves. I guess if you do the best you can, any old job will do. Even advertising!
Yep, if you do your best , you can get the pleasure, but only if you enjoy the job to start with!! And advertising isn't " any old job" if you weren't very good at it, nobody would employ you!!
