Strathmore Bristol Vellum. Prismacolor colored pencils. Flesh colors were burnished (blended) with a white colored pencil. Black jacket is a blend of black, ultramarine blue, burnt umber, and then more black pencil (layered). Next, I blended these colors with a colorless wax pencil, and finally I used a small amount of turpentine to blend the colors. That got rid of any white areas. (I did not have any odorless turpentine or mineral spirits, which would have been preferred to turpentine.) His hair was also blended with turpentine. Then I gave it three sprays of Krylon fixative to finish it.

Thanks, Monty. I experimented a little on this one. Instead of using a colorless wax blending pencil on his flesh tones, as I would have done in the past, I burnished them with a white pencil. I also used (for the first time on a colored pencil drawing) some turpentine to blend his jacket and his hair.  :blowkiss: :blowkiss: :cute: :hi:

I would never had the idea ! does it work with any colored pencils ? you use a brush to put it on your drawing ? and what is the wax pencil ? sorry for all these questions but I'm curious with all the new techniques I may learn here :) excellent drawing anywya, well done ! :magic: :*D: :*D: *xD

This was the first time I have burnished any colored pencil light colors with a white colored pencil. I have used the colorless wax pencil in the past to blend all colored pencil colors. I read about this in a library book, and I decided to give it a try. This was also the first time I have used any medium (turpentine, in this case) on my colored pencil portraits. This has been suggested to me by several artists, but I've been afraid to do it until last night. I used a white bristle #3 flat oil paint brush and put a small amount of turpentine in one of those tin palette cups. As stated above, I only used it on Colin's jacket and hair. Lightly on the hair, then I went over some places with the colored pencils. Both Sanford Prismcolor and Derwent make colorless blending pencils. I paid $3.69 USD for a package of two Prismacolor colorless pencils. I paid $9.99 USD for Derwent's package containg four pencils: two colorless blender's and two pencils for burnishing (illuminating). I haven't tried the latter ones, yet. I do not know how turpentine works on other pencils, but it seems to dissolve the wax in the wax based ones. It acts a bit like water does on watercolor pencils. I wanted the jacket to look like a solid color, without any tiny white specks of paper showing, and the colorless wax pencil was not doing a good enough job of it.

thank you so much for these detailed explanations ! I think I've bought the same derwent set with two burnishers and blenders. I had tried the blender in my Bjork portrait, the one in colours and with the kimono, I've used it for the colored reflections in the hair, it hasn't worked the way I had expected but I found the result interesting. For your new technique, the key is WAX I think. I didn't know this word, I had to look for it and the truth is I don't know if my colored pencils contain wax. I used to make oil painting when I was a child so I still have turpentine but it's probably to old, I will make a test anyway, just to see... I've bought recently watercolour pencils, so I will try this new technique and if I enjoy it I will try to go further with the turpentine and wax experiments. thank you again for your answer dear Joyce ! I'm always so glad to discover new things about drrawing !

You are welcome, dear. I am appreciative of the information that has been handed down to me, and I try to share what I have learned with others. Lately I have been including this out-of-the ordinary kind of information on the backs of my drawings, otherwise I might forget what I have used. Some information that I have gathered comes from library books of various artists.

yes, we learn a lot here and I try to share with others as well ; do you know professionnal artists ? I've never thought about looking for informations in books, I should have a look at the library too. :)

I do not personally know any professional artists at this time. I met one at a friend's house several years ago, and his daughter was in the same grade in school as one of our daughters. His name is Bert Seabourne. "Bert Seabourn exhibits throughout the United States and has shown his art in England, Germany, France, Russia, Taiwan, Singapore, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador. His work is not only in private collections worldwide, but is in many public collections including The Vatican Museum of Religious Art, The American Embassy, London, The National Palace Museum of Taiwan, Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, Washington, D.C., The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, Oklahoma City, President Ford Library, Oklahoma City Museum of Art, and The President George and Barbara Bush Collection." I took some lessons from an artist in Albuquerque many years ago. His name was John Scholle. He wrote a book titled, The Road to Timbuktu (or Timbuctoo), but it is out of print now. I read this book first when we lived in Chicago, but forgot that I had read it. When I decided to take those lessons (a night class) with him, I decided to get his book and read it. I wasn't far into it, before I realized, "I have read the book, before!" It was about a camel caravan that he traveled with to Timbuktu. I liked to read stories about desert travel. I read all kinds of adventure books when I was young. I still like non-fiction best, about people and other countries.

very impressive and interesting, I've made a research about him on the web, I love his horses and hawks ! he also makes a lot of paintings about native americans for what I've seen. May be he has native ancestors ? so you've followed some kind of "master class" with him, that was probably a great moment ! I've known a painter when I was a child, I was at school with his sons and my sister and I had lessons with him for a couple of years, his name is Simon Pasek http://www.atoutcoeur-calais.com/modulosite2/fiche.php?id=280&fr=1&id_bouton=2345 I really loved these times in his workshop.

Bert Seabourne was a very polite and interesting person the evening Ed and I met him and his wife, at a friend's house. But, I have to be honest with you. I am not a lover of Expressionish artwork, which seems to be the majority of his work these days. I see nothing hard about thowing paint upon an upright canvas, and letting it drip down or dabbing spots of paint here and there, at random. I think most children could create a painting with the same amount of interest. I prefer traditional art. I appreciate an artist's drawing skills and workmanship that goes into creating traditional art. All of the artists' works shown in website that you have mentioned above, are paintings that I admire. When I look at them, my eyes tell me what I am looking at. I do not have to ask myself, Who? What? Why? Where? When? or How? when I look at their work.

yes, I understand you, i usually prefer traditionnl paintings too even if I am always curious and interested in "contemporary" art (not sure about this, I had to ask to google), some "modern" artist can reach my heart somehow but my favorites are mostly the impressionnism; the surrealism and some romantic painter as well. Next week is gonna be great, we are going to Giverny with my parents and we will see the Clark collection ! http://giverny.org/museums/impressionism/exhibition/clark/ e will also visit Monet's house and his gardens http://www.fondation-monet.fr/uk/content/monet-giverny I am so excited !

yes, one can easily get surrounded by messages and the stupid thing is that only the more recent ones are available, or if there is a way to get the old ones first I don't knw it....

The only way I know that you can get to the old ones, is to go through your whole gallery and look for the ones you did not answer. I try to answer evey comment, but I miss a few...but not intentionally.

I don't have much time for drawing so I usually submit only two or three protraits per month, I am there daily though, to see the other's work and to chat.

I was concentrating so hard on trying to answer your questions, that I forgot to thank you, dear. THANK YOU, Marie. Most all of my colored pencils are wax based, except for a set of 12 Prismacolor VERITHIN, hard, thin lead pencils. They are good for sharp lines and some details. I used the VERITHIN black and dark brown when I went over Colin's hair. This is what Derwent has to say about their 'burnisher' & 'blender' pencils. BURNISHER: Used OVER colour creates a burnish (or shine) without changing the colour of your artwork. Lay the burnisher down FIRST and it can be used for 'wax resist' techniques in conjunction with our softer pencils. COLOURLESS BLENDER: Blends colours together easily. Helps artists to apply more layers of colour. Enhances the intensity of coloured pencil.

I've read your mails, thank you very much, I think this will be usefull when I'll finally buy "real" artist colored pencils, for the moment I use very cheap ones but I like their bright colors and they are tender ; I think they're made with wax but I'll have to chek it out ! :) :whip: :whip: :blowkiss:

You should have some idea if they are wax based or not, if you have tried to erase them. Wax based colored pencils are next to impossible to erase, but ordinary hard lead colored pencils will erase, providing you haven't used anythng to rub their color firmly into the paper. Watercolor colored pencils will erase too, until you add water to them.  :blowkiss: I thought the information might be useful to you, should you decide to invest in more colored pencils. I was not sure you could find the book I got that information from, in France. :blowkiss: :cute: :hi:

Thanks, Ray. I try to do all of my portraits well, but I don't always succeed. Perhaps the reason I do some better than others, is because I like them more. I don't know how much this element plays into my work, but if it does, it is not done consciously.  :blowkiss: :cute: :hi:

I agree Joyce...If one has a high regard for the person we portray with our art, it comes forth in the work :ok: :ok: :hi:

Thanks, Vivi. This was one of my quickie portraits. I was experimenting with a solvent, to dissolve the wax in the colored pencils in some areas.

That sounds like it was a really great trip. Was this your first time to New Zealand? I have never been there; nor have I been to Australia. :) :blowkiss:  :hi:

Yes, from all of the pictures I have seen of New Zealand, it ilooks like quite a scenic place. Bet you hated to have tyour vacation come to an end, and did not have time to look around more. I know that has been the case of several of our overseas trips.  :blowkiss:  :cute:

For sure, I would have loved to stay much longer in NZ, especially in the South Island... mountains and sea are magic there... :oO:  but my boss would not agree ! :blowkiss:

Is it all right for me to ask where it was that you were on New Zealand's South Island? Just curious. I am one of those people who like maps, geography, etc. I am guessing that it was Christchurch

I am glad you had the opportunity to see more of New Zealand, than just the World Cup. New Zealand is quite a distance from France. I don't imagine you will be going back....unless another World Cup is held there that you want to see. :guffaw: :ok: :blowkiss: :hi:

I hope you will be able to return to New Zealand, and I hope you won't have to wait too many years to do it. I am quite certain that I will never get there. The country I would most like to visit is Switzerland, but I am afraid that wish will never be realized. I did get glimpses of it from a train, in 1989, when Ed and I went from Frankfurt, Ger. to Pordenone, Italy. Our youngest son was stationed in Aviano, Italy then. John was in the United States Air Force at that time.

Thank you, Manny. This was what I would call my "light colored pencil work." I did not put down as many layers of colored pencils as I have on some of my previous colored pencil portraits. It did not take as long to do as some of them, either.
