Just had a look at Jeremy Brett's page and it looks as though there are about 40 , and I must say I was shocked that there were not more by other artists. I have to say , I don't have them all as he seems to sell well ( Thank Goodness )
It's a purposefully blue version of a statue that's normally white, by Fabien Mérelle, called "A l'origine". The statue shows a person trying to cope with the weight of prejudice like a strongman in a circus. It was first installed in Le Havre, Normandy, together with another sculpture by Fabien Mérelle which got burnt by heinous vandals (a man carrying his daughter on his shoulders, both of them looking at the horizon - a beautiful story). The sculptor hoped that Le Havre would "adopt" both his works, and so did I, then some people got the elephant statue removed. Last summer, it reappeared in Sainte Adresse, on the roof of the local venue, and I have no idea where it is now. If it depended on me it would stay in Le Havre for good as the least you can say about this piece is that it is a rare sight and conveys a strong message. I'm glad I felt like matching my username with a convincing avatar at last and asked myself "where can you see elephants in Normandy anyway"
Thank you for all the details Vanessa. I can't help but wonder at the thinking of the people who got the statue removed in the first place.
There is a saying here " there's nowt stranger than folk" and I think it applies in this case !
