I am a self taught artist, I like to draw in what I call photo realism plus. Photo realism to me means that I try very hard to come up with the exact likeness of the person that I am drawing. As a help, a quick photo gives me "what they look like" on the surface but not really "who they are". The plus is where as an artist, I try to draw in the "who they are". The expression, the feelings and personality of the person. I draw mostly babies and kids for Moms. Moms love to talk about their little ones which is a big help in the "who they are" part of the drawing.
