Only by looking at his gallery did I realise that he played Michael in Ryan's Daughter (a sometimes cruel yet beautiful film)! He was so outstandingly talented, it's so great you got an autograph and this is such a beautiful tribute.
Of course Sir John was making movies way before I was born, and all through my movie going life he was always there. I think it must have been in the late 90's when he signed this for me. For many years I had it framed and on display . Eventually I used the frame for another painting and I think he is still in storage somewhere in the house.
He popped up here as a "random portrait" the other day and I clicked on him for old times sake. I was surprised to see there were no comments on him !!
I realised it must have been about 5 years ago, after the blip on "Stars" when we were all posting like mad, trying to get caught up. With so many people poating so many works, not many people had time to comment. Sooooo... I removed his portrait and reposted it!!
Silly I know, but I was quite pleased with it and wanted it to be seen...Ego If you ever get the chance to see"Tunes of Glory" it is a masterclass of acting with Sir John Mills and Sir Alex Guiness.
In May 2015, we were all so concerned about "rebuilding" our galleries after the "crash" that it certainly made us less attentive to our friends' posts. It's a good thing that you reposted this portrait, else I wouldn't have heard of "Tunes of Glory" at all. My parents had me watch many films about World War II as it was easier than telling me their childhood memories. Most were about Overlord / D-Day and the ensuing Battle of Normandy, some about the "Blitzkrieg" and the battle of Dunkirk, and I'm not sure that aside from River Kwai I saw Sir Alec Guinness in any war film. I've mostly seen him, and Sir John Mills, in David Lean films (not counting the first Star Wars trilogy). I'll look for a chance to see "Tunes of Glory".
No, you're correct, I don't remember many other "war" movies with Alec Guinness, but his career was so varied. "the Ladykillers" was a lovely little British comedy, maybe a little dated now. "Tunes of Glory was not a war movie as such, though very military. But what a "war" for acting honours between two gentlemen at the top of their game !!
If you do get to see it , perhaps you will think differently. We all have different tastes.

Great portrait, I like the colours. And even the "minor matters", his hands and jacket, are eye-catchers.
