I kiss you Rodney
This was the best uyou could do at the time you drew it and that was already excellent! I like your representation of skin tone and hair! Oh, God, I wish I could do this but I never knwo which colours I should use. For example, I would have never thought nor dare to use green or blue in the hair but you made a really great choice with such a good result. i'm really impressed by your work
How many colours did you use for the hair? Did you choose without knowing what would be the result or were you perfectly aware of what it was going to give?
For the hair I started doing the dark areas with light streaks of indigo blue mixed with tuscan red. I followed it with sand color over the entire hair area. I blended in tones of white and used tissue paper to try to smooth it out. I erased certain areas to try to lighten some of the colors. I actually didn't use any green but it probably looks like there is some bcause of the mixture. I've been trying a lot of different things to get flesh tones and hair tints. It is really hard, but hopefully it will pay off with practice. For flesh I used a light peach, covered it with white, put just a touch of rose in the cheek areas, and finally blended light beige over the whole thing.
I did a lot of experimenting over the last couple of weeks trying various colors, so at first I didn't know how it would turn out. I have about half a dozen drawings sitting in my portfolio that I completely abandoned because I messed up the color lol. It's a lot of trial and error.
OK; Well, many thanks for these comprehensive explanations. I agree awith you, it's really hard and I do not dare to try, fearing that I might ruin my drawings and I don't have the courage to try other drawings than celebrities to test mix of colours for skin tones. But, what I noticed is that you really made good choices there. For example, to represent the shadows on the basis of the nose : you chose, I don't know, maybe some kind of grey or brown which suits very well. One day, I used black there and it made a too huge contrast with the other colours so, afterwards, I drew Shannen Doherty and Jason Priestly (posted there) with almost only one colour because I didn't know what colour to use for the contrasts!!!
