Hello haven't heard from you in a while. Tried to make this a bit more dramatic and still trying to get the values more vibrant. It will come along I am sure. Thanks again for your response and I will be looking forward to seeing more of your excellent works.
well, I saw your MJ pencil there in the left hand column and thought I'd say 'Hello Christine!'
In my opinion, you have 'vibrant' - always had it - and pencil drawings are notoriously hard to reproduce - even good printers hate them - so - to get vibrancy there - you'll have to - what - grind out a deep groove in either your index finger or your thumb!
When I copy them I always take it to Photoshop and have to up the contrast about 15 and then have to bring down the brightness about 5 to 7 points before it resembles the original some what. Oh well it is still my favorite medium. Now since I have no patience with hair I do use graphite powder and a watercolor brush and some charcoal and do a type of wash. It seems to work better for me it is more spontaneous and I am finishing my portraits in an average of two hours. Someday I would like to do on the spot portraits and people don't want to sit for more than an hour.
wow! On the spot? Easel and stool? Usually ugly strangers? Well - then a huge 'Hats Off" to you! That's tremendous courage. I have to have some sort of emotional attachment or admiration before I can even draw it at all. I had a buyer who wanted a Miley Cyrus and another for Zac Effron and I just couldn't bring myself to do it. So... congratulations on your bravery, perspicacity, patience, kindness of spirit and whatever else it takes to do such a thing!
I loved life drawing class but you do get a great amount of feed back. I like to use graphite powder especially in the background so it may present a problem out doors I guess I will have to stick to my basement seating posing area for more spontaneous on the spot drawings. It is challenging but oh so much fun to challenge myself.
Oh I forgot I love to sculpt too have a few pieces in clay. A head but that was a friend and a hand (mine) and a foot mine also. Fun doing the three dimentional things too.
I have taken to painting parts of the drawing with graphite powder and used charcoal to smudge the blacks and try to make the values stand out more. I haven't gotten the total effect yet but I am working on it. JR Forthson has a great way of getting the full spectrum of values. I have always been a bit timid on getting the full darks but I am working on it. SOMEDAY!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks a million Peggy I am trying to improve and the time needed to work from start to finish is getting more spontaneous. Only two hours for this portrait. I am using watercolor, charcoal and some graphite powder and of course pencil.

Hi Ajaa I first used graphite powder and applied it to the background in a sort of cloudy swirling. Then I took the graphite powder and dotted it in places. Leaving some white showing though. Then I took charcoal and water and painted it out with watercolor brush. I then used charcoal for the really dark portions so it is more of a blend of watercolor technique and pencil and the charcoal. I am still fighting with values because my natural tendency is to be too light with regular pencil.

It is much fun and using all these things cuts down the time needed to complete the piece. Now about two hours.
